Design Technology-Resistant Materials

Key Stage 3:

During Year 7 through to Year 9 pupils at Brompton Hall work on developing basic workshop skills, health & safety and learning about the key elements of design and technology. Working with different materials such as wood, metals and plastics, pupils develop skills in the correct and safe use of tools and workshop machinery as well as basic woodworking and production techniques, while producing a varied range of items of increasing levels of complexity. Pupils work from design briefs, research and evaluate existing designs, then design and produce their own article.

Key Stage 4:

In Years 10 and 11 students follow a full GCSE course in Resistant Materials; bringing together all the skills and knowledge developed over previous years. This course involves following an externally set design brief, to research, design, then produce an article which meets the requirements of the brief – articles can range from simple containers in wood, plastic or metal or a combination of these, to larger pieces of furniture etc.
