Careers Policy
As students become more autonomous, they
need to understand the structure and assessment objectives of
the subjects they are studying. Careers education encourages
young people to prepare for their future lives. In developing
career management skills, students will increasing become aware
of choices they and others are making in the preparation for the
world of work after school. Careers is designed to promote
discussion and reflection upon aspects such as personal
development, coping with transition, lifelong learning and the
meaning of ‘work’.
This subject develops decision making
skills, preparing the pupils for work experience placements, and
including health and safety in the work place. It focuses on the
two main strands of employability; the initial preparation for
employment and the skills for career management.
Aims
To provide a series of learning experiences
leading to work experience placements which promote;
- A sense of self fulfilment through
individual choices and self examination.
- An awareness of the structure on
modern day industry.
- An awareness of the choices open to
them after school and before full time employment.
- To give a realistic aspiration for
future full time work through a series of 1 or 2 week
placements.
- To have an understanding about the
health and safety issues in a variety of work situations.
- To prepare pupils for life outside the
family home (life skills, budgeting etc. )
Resources
Resources are planned wherever possible
around the usual subject expenditures but take into account,
college ‘uniform’, boots and overalls needed for work
experiences and the financial implications of getting boys to
their placements.
Visits to a variety of work places are
taken over the year, each of which is risk assessed beforehand.
A work experience placement /college links
person has been appointed.
The capitation is sanctioned by the Head
Teacher and the Governing body.
Assessment
Assessment in Careers is carried out in
line with the whole school policies on marking, recording and
reporting.
Health and Safety
Health and Safety in the work place is
taught as a part of the course and reminders given before work
experience placement or visits where applicable.
